LIHUE — Kauai High School’s Brooke Hornos fired a day’s-best 261 (93 prone, 81 standing, 87 kneeling) to lead the Red Raider girls to a 1211-728 victory over Island School Wednesday at its home range in air riflery.
On the boys’ firing line, Red Raiders Alec Greer and Colby Ihara-Takase combined for more than 500 points to lead the Kauai boys to a 1215-920 showing over the Voyager men.
Greer (92 prone, 73 standing, 87 kneeling) and Ihara-Takase (87-83-82) ended the day tying for high-point honors at 252 points apiece.
The pair was followed by Hikari Oberman tallying a 251 (87-75-89), just a digit back of the leaders. Other Raiders contributing to the victory included Ryker Amimoto (93-64-86-243) and Darian Gerardo (78-70-69-217).
Other Red Raider boys on the firing line included Bryson Carbonel (80-58-54-192), Ryan Valhuerdi (82-57-75-214) and Kaimi Texeira (86-63-52-201).
Island School boys were led by Micah Kimi posting a 221 (84-56-81) followed by David Caminos (66-62-55-183), Stephen Foster (73-58-47-178), Tanner Tavares (66-51-59-176) and Judah Brand (66-38-58-162).
Other Voyager boys on the firing line included Coleman Jonas (63-34-44-141), Eosin Chelius (66-28-66-160) and Reece Valencia (68-25-30-123).
Shooting in a range made-over by a Boy Scout Eagle project over the summer, and shrouded by misty rains, Hornos was followed by Krystle Pascua (91-79-73-243), Jamie McDermott (92-70-80-242), Emma Leary (82-81-71-234) and Joelle Patricio (95-53-83-231).
“If these girls shot their average, they would have gotten past the Waimea girls, last week,” said Mike Kano, a parent spectator. “But they were having an ‘off’ day, and the rain (with increased humidity inside the Kaumakani Neighborhood Center) didn’t help.”
Ashley Silvestre topped the Island School girls, posting a 217 (84-57-76) followed by Amanda Nguyen (83-31-66-180), Alex Obert (81-44-42-167) and Lauren Olke (71-48-45-164).
Other Island School girls on the firing line included Deanna Sloger (64-39-20-123), Hannah Welan (30-3-14-47) and Aliana Ho (76-31-44-151).
With the win, Kauai will travel to the Kapaa High School campus range Wednesday while Island School returns to host Waimea. Both matches get underway at 3 p.m.
