LIHUE —So far this year, incumbent Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. outraised his challenger Dustin Barca by more than $10,000 and outspent him by more than $100,000, according to the latest round of campaign reports released Monday.
Between Jan. 1 and Oct. 20, Carvalho raised $73,434. He spent $160,638 during that same timeframe and has a surplus of $105,344 going into the Nov. 4 General Election. He started the year with $192,591 cash on hand.
His opponent, professional surfer and mixed martial arts fighter Barca, has raised $62,884 in his first run for public office. He has spent $59,572 and has $3,312 cash on hand.
Between Aug. 10 and Oct. 20, Carvalho raised $22,061 to Barca’s $9,413. He outspent Barca’s $9,564 by dishing out $76,273 during the same timeframe.
Carvalho’s largest contributors since Aug. 10 were Honolulu resident and Pacific Management Consultants, Inc. Hawaii President Amy Hirano ($4,000), the Hawaii Laborers’ and Employers’ C&E Trust Fund ($4,000), the Hawaii Laborers PAC ($2,000) and Michael and Theolinda Matsumoto (2,000 each).
Barca’s largest contributor since that date was Nanea Correa, owner of Hanalei bar Tahiti Nui, who gave $3,000. Additionally, Hanalei residents Michael Sheehan gave $1,000 and Nancy Puulei-Chandler gave $820.
District 14
State House District 14 incumbent Derek Kawakami, a Democrat, began his re-election campaign in late 2012 with $18,801 in the bank and has raised $55,605. He currently has $28,007 on hand and reports a surplus of $14,545.
His Republican challenger, Jonathan Hoomanawanui, started off the year with $910 and has raised $4,096 over the last nine months. During that same time, the North Shore resident also spent $3,487, leaving him with a $364 surplus.
District 15
State House District 15 Democratic incumbent James “Jimmy” Tokioka started the election period with $28,106 in the bank and has raised $65,311. He has spent $64,440 and reports a current surplus of $21,477.
His Republican opponent, Steve Yoder, is reporting a current deficit of $158. Over the last nine months, Yoder has raised $23,062, spent $21,303 and has $1,759 cash on hand.
District 16
State House District 16 incumbent Daynette “Dee” Morikawa, a Democrat, reported having $6,659 cash on hand when she began her re-election campaign in 2012. Since the new year, she has raised $32,032 and spent $27,536.
Morikawa reports $11,155 cash on hand and a surplus of $10,929.
Her challenger, Republican Victoria “Vickie” Franks, reported having $300 at the beginning of her campaign and has raised $3,726 since Jan. 1. She spent $2,984 and has $1,042 in the bank.
Council
– Incumbent Tim Bynum started the campaign $1,483 in the red. He has raised $20,640, spent $30,115 and reports a current deficit of $7,957.
– Incumbent Vice Chair Mason Chock, who was appointed to the council in November, has raised $17,519, spent $11,881 and has $5,638 cash on hand.
– Council Chair Jay Furfaro started his bid for re-election with $1,163 in the bank. This year he has raised $12,805, spent $13,957 and has $11 cash on hand. He reports an overall deficit of $34,104.
– Incumber Gary Hooser started his campaign with $929 in the bank. Over the last nine months he has raised $41,782, spent $39,552 and has $3,160 cash on hand. He reports an overall surplus of $1,453.
– Incumbent Ross Kagawa started with $21,159 in the bank. He has raised $19,547, spent $28,273 and has $12,433 cash on hand.
– Incumbent JoAnn Yukimura started with $7,330 cash and has raised $36,980 since Jan. 1. She spent $33,363 and has $10,947 in the bank.
– Incumbent Mel Rapozo started with $7,846. He raised $32,056, spent $21,343 and has $18,559 cash on hand.
– Arthur Brun raised $18,514 through Oct. 20. He spent $14,197 and has $4,316 in the bank.
– Felicia Cowden started her bid for office with $329. Since the New Year, she has raised $51,001, spent $47,051 and has $4,278 cash on hand. She reports an overall deficit of $10,918.
– In his first bid for office, Arryl Kaneshiro has raised more money than any other candidate with $80,141. He has spent $38,650 and has $41,490 cash on hand.
– Kipu Kai Kualii started his campaign with a $5,253 deficit and has raised $24,227. He has spent $20,744 and reports a current deficit of $1,927.
– Darryl Perry reports raising $9,121, spending $3,035 and has $6,086 cash on hand. He has a surplus of $4,086.
– Tiana Lariano raised $3,963, spent $3,577 and has $386 in the bank.
– Candidate Bill DeCosta has failed to file campaign spending reports.
