LIHUE – Chucky Boy Chock has a way with words and music.
He wrote songs for Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoole, The Brothers Cazimero and Kapena. He received nominations for Na Hoku Hanohano awards, including contemporary album of the year, contemporary Hawaiian album of the year, religious album of the year and song of the year.
But he isn’t finished making his mark on the world.
The Kauai musician’s studio recorded and mixed a version of the song “The Young Navigators” will be officially released in the near future, Chock said.
Creative credit for the sound track goes to Chock and popular Hawaii performer Jack Johnson, a Brushfire Records artist.
“Jack asked to collaborate on the song,” Chock said. “I was in awe. He made it really cool.”
While Chock said it was difficult to collaborate with someone whom he hadn’t joined creative forces with before, it resulted in a very positive outcome.
“He made it clearer, made sense of it. It tells the story beautifully,” Chock said.
The music track is based on the story of the Hokulea legacy — now being honored in a worldwide journey aboard the Hokulea canoes. The boats will be covering 47,000 nautical miles with stops at 85 ports in 26 different countries. The navigators are currently traveling through the waters of the South Pacific near Samoa.
Besides the excitement surrounding the official release of “The Young Navigators” song, Chock is looking forward to sharing Hawaiian culture. Talks are underway regarding international travel in the name of spreading peace and sustainability in several locations.
“New Zealand in March 2015 and South Africa in December 2015,” Chock said.
He explained how they will be traveling with the intent of delivering not only music but breadfruit trees.
Other countries on their itinerary, Chock said, may include Portugal and Spain, where they may present to the king of Spain.
Chock’s instrumental abilities include playing ukulele, guitar and steel drum as well as singing and composing music.
