KALAHEO — National Tropical Botanical Garden and Kauai Community College present the second autumn lecture in the collaborative series “Plants for our Planet” 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 21 at Kauai Community College cafeteria
Dr. Clay Trauernicht, a specialist in fire management with the cooperative extension program in the college of tropical agriculture and human resources at the University of Hawaii, will talk about the role of fire in environmental management.
Trauernicht coordinates the Pacific Fire Exchange, a program that builds partnerships and develops and shares fire science information with landowners and resource managers.
Changing rain patterns and prolonged drought play a major role in Hawaii’s wildfires, which are growing in size and frequency, says Trauernicht. He notes that in the last decade Hawaii has seen over 1,000 ignitions burning 20,000 acres each year across the state. In this talk, he will provide a global perspective as he explains the fundamentals of fire ecology and its importance to Hawaii.
