Chris Kauwe, a Kauai resident and surfing/canoe surfing instructor for Hoku Sports, recently copped top honors in the Long Board Open division at the 16th annual Rell Sunn Surf Contest Benefit in Montauk, New York.
Kauwe said he worked in 68-degree water in a full-length wetsuit to earn the honor over a field of more than 40 competitors in one- to two-foot East Cost surf at the Ditch Plains Beach.
Kauwe said he was able to execute patented long board tricks including head stands, the Buddah, the Coffin, switch footing, spinners, and the Allen Wrench.
Adding to his trophy, Kauwe joined steersman Jeremy Grosvenor, Carol Choi and Jun Lee to take top honors in the four-man surfing canoe, also shipped from Kauai, in the Anything Goes division.
