LIHUE — An Eleele woman is asking the public’s help in finding her dog, which she said was shot at Wednesday evening in the Hanapepe Valley before disappearing.
Jennifer Ortal said her boyfriend was driving with the animal along Awawa Road when he stopped to speak with a friend. The dog reportedly jumped from the vehicle and ran behind a house.
“There were two bangs, or shots, fired,” Ortal said. “I don’t know if my dog was hit or not but he was shot at and he ran. And now we’re looking for him.”
Ortal said the family dog, a 10-year-old male mixed terrier named Loco Moku, is very friendly and gentle, and there was no reason for the person to shoot at him. She filed a report with the Kauai Police Department Wednesday. Ortal and others have been searching the valley since the incident with no luck, and she planned to put up posters with the dog’s photo.
“I totally just want to get my dog back,” she said. “If he did not or does not survive this, I just want to tell people, ‘Hey, this is not right.’”
