When it came time for the Kauai Historical Society to hold its annual Pa’ina on the year it celebrated its 100th anniversary, only one place seemed fitting: Smith’s Tropical Paradise in Wailua.
“We’re really happy to have it at Smith’s,” said Donna Stewart, publicity coordinator for Saturday’s fundraiser. “It’s a beautiful, magnificent location.”
The event begins at 5 p.m. with no-host cocktails and music by Larry Rivera. There will be a buffet and silent auction. Headlining the entertainment is Cyril Pahinui, the son of musical legend Gabby Pahinui and considered one of Hawaii’s most gifted guitarists and singers. Accompanying Pahinui will be musicians Peter Moon Jr. and Jeff Au Hoy.
A highlight for many will be the chance to tour the spectacular grounds of Smith’s Tropical Paradise. Ponds, streams, bridges, canoes and peacocks, along with the lush, green plants, brush and trees, create an unforgettable experience.
“Everyone just enjoys the whole atmosphere, the feel of the place,” Stewart said. “We’re fortunate they’re willing to have us there.”
The Smith family has long been a big part of Kauai, economically, socially and culturally.
“They share so much knowledge and do it in a gracious way,” Stewart said.
And generous, too. Smith’s has pledged to donate $1 to the historical society for each drink sold that night.
Tickets for the Nov. 1 event cost $75.
Proceeds support the historical society, which among its duties, archives the island’s rare and precious documents, photographs, maps and books.
