HAENA – Ocean Safety officials have closed Makua Beach to swimming until further notice due to a shark encounter that occurred at around 12:30 p.m. today. Makua Beach, also known as Tunnels, is located in Haena on the north shore.
Experienced spear divers reported to lifeguards that a roughly seven to eight-foot-long shark aggressively approached them while they were free-diving in a popular snorkeling area known as Tunnels lagoon. The divers gave up their catch to the shark and were able to swim away unharmed.
‘Shark Sighted’ and ‘No Swimming’ signs have been posted along the beach and the public is advised to stay out of the water until further notice.
The beach will remain closed until at least Wednesday morning, when lifeguards will reassess if the water is safe for swimming.
