Waimea High School girls and Kauai High School boys finished sixth and seventh during the Civilian Marksmanship Program Hawaii High School Athletic Association state air riflery championships Tuesday at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall on Oahu.
The Menehune girls, who squeaked past Kauai for the Kauai Interscholastic Federation title last week, finished the state competition with 1,842-15 points, just four points shy of the Maui girls, who clinched fifth place with 1,938-22 points.
The Owls of Mid Pacific Institute claimed the state championships with 2,106-61 points.
Hikari Oberman of Kauai High School topped the Red Raider shooting with 664-10 (181-7 prone, 154-1 standing, 171-4 kneeling) points toward the team’s 1,938-34 points for seventh place.
The boys division was taken by the Punahou squad tallying 2,120-49 points.
Oberman was followed by Ryker Amimoto, a returning shooter to the state competition, who finished at 473-6 (180-4, 137-1, 156-1), Colby Ihara-Takase (173-3, 143-2, 165-3 481-8), and Alec Greer (1865-6, 120-0, 172-2, 478-8). All of the Red Raider marksmen were named to the KIF air riflery all stars.
Oberman finished 25th overall in the division which was taken by Darren Nirei of the Hawaii Baptist Academy, who posted a 540-20 (193-10, 166-4, 181-6).
Ryan Valhuerdi of Kauai High School finished 58th overall at 455-5 (182-4, 134-0, 139-1) points.
Fellow Red Raider shooter Brooke Hornos was the sole Kauai female to join the four Menehune team shooters at the state. She finished 18th at 512-14 (193-9, 150-2, 169-3) points. The top individual girls shooter, Isabel Villanueva of St. Francis, posted a 548-17 (191-8, 174-2, 183-7).
Melia Takakusagi of Waimea topped the Menehune team scoring with 485-4 (181-2, 145-1, 159-1) points in 40th place, overall followed by Kayla Ishida (179-3, 123-0, 160-1 462-4), Janine Joy Prado (153-0, 131-0, 170-2 454-2) and Quiana Duarte (164-3, 122-0, 155-2 441-5).
Ishida, Prado and Duarte were named to the KIF girls air riflery all stars, Jaime McDermott joining Hornos in the recognition.
