The second Kauai Rice Festival is scheduled 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Rice Shopping Center on Rice Street. It celebrates the importance of rice as a staple and important food ingredient in Hawaii’s culinary, cultural and ethnic history.
The second Kauai Rice Festival is scheduled 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Rice Shopping Center on Rice Street. It celebrates the importance of rice as a staple and important food ingredient in Hawaii’s culinary, cultural and ethnic history.
There will be free entertainment including Taiko Drum music by Joyful Noise, Wilcox Elementary and Kapaa Middle School Ukelele Troupes, and Orama Nui O Kauai.
Island celebrity chef and restaurateur Sam Choy returns to Kauai to participate in one of the cooking demonstrations and tastings. There will also be a musubi eating contest that will challenge five contestants to consume eight musubi.
Another new component in the 2014 festival is a mochi contest that will have three criteria: presentation, taste and use of Hawaiian ingredients.
