LIHUE — To prepare for the implementation of the new Pay as You Throw Ordinance, which will take effect in July 2015, the Department of Public Works is conducting a PAYT Cart Survey.
The purpose is to determine how many 64- and 96-gallon refuse carts should be ordered for the new program.
Randomly selected property owners will be receiving the survey in the mail this week, and are asked to complete the pre-stamped survey and mail it back.
Residents may also participate in the survey be visiting the county’s website, www.kauai.gov/cartsurvey, or by calling the County Recycling Office at 241-4841.
“I would like to ask everyone to please take the time to complete the survey,” said County Engineer Larry Dill. “The more people that respond the more accurate we can be with our order.”
The PAYT Ordinance provides residents a choice of refuse cart sizes with associated fees: 96-gallon cart, total fee of $18 per month for service ($6 base assessment plus a $12 collection fee) or 64-gallon cart, total fee of $10 per month for service ($6 base assessment plus a $4 collection fee).
Those who are currently receiving automated refuse collection service will be able to continue to use the 96-gallon cart or downsize to a 64-gallon cart, which will greatly reduce their impact on Kauai’s landfill.
In December, Refuse Collection Assessment forms will be sent to property owners so that they can officially make their choices on cart sizes.
