HAENA – Makua Beach was closed after divers encountered a shark about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Also known as Tunnels Beach, it will remained closed to swimming until at least this morning.
Experienced spear divers reported to lifeguards that a roughly seven to eight-foot-long shark aggressively approached them while they were free diving in a popular snorkeling area known as Tunnels Lagoon.
The divers gave up their catch to the shark and were able to swim away unharmed.
“Shark Sighted” and “No Swimming” signs have been posted along the beach and the public is advised to stay out of the water until lifeguards reassess if the water is safe for swimming.
