KAPAA — Kapaa High School’s varsity girls volleyball team hit 18 aces en route to beating Island School in straight sets Friday night at home.
The Warriors (7-2 KIF, 2-0 second round, 0-1 playoff) swept the Voyagers, 25-12, 25-10 and 25-6.
“We don’t overlook anybody. In preparation, we work on our end — our passing, keeping the ball in play and just making good choices,” said Kapaa head coach Evan Costa. “It’s something we’ve been working on … everybody has a role (and we work so that) nobody gets surprised.”
Warriors junior Tori Daligcon scored nine of those aces for Kapaa. Junior Brylyn Aiwohi scored six, senior Eryka Keoho had two and junior Haaheo Mahinai had one.
“Our serving was really good tonight,” Daligcon said. “I’ve been getting better at my serving. I never really used to be good at serving. Now it feels great to finally get it down and be able to hit spots.”
Daligcon also had four kills, three during the first set.
Island School head coach Brad Sato said his team has struggled with initiating rallies this year.
“We had long rallies and both sides were able to keep the ball in play. For us, we couldn’t start the rally all of the time. That, ultimately, was our downfall,” the Voyagers coach said. “It’s a team sport and it’s (about) team effort. Not one person is going to do it … You have to rely on each other.
Though Island School (0-8 KIF, 0-2 second round) has yet win a match, Sato said he hopes his team, especially his seniors, will continue to give 100 percent going forward and enjoy playing through the rest of the season.
“We’re at the point where there’s really nothing to lose. So we might as well go out and have some fun,” he said.
Senior Autumn Warnock accounted for three blocks and two kills in the Voyagers effort.
Earlier in the evening, Kapaa’s junior varsity squad swept Island School, 25-22, 25-6 and 25-19.
Kapaa will play at Kauai (8-1 KIF, 2-0 second round, 1-0 playoff) and Island School will host Waimea (2-6 KIF, 0-2 second round) on Tuesday. The JV teams play 5 p.m. and the varsity will follow.
“It’s going to be a fight. I can feel it,” Daligcon said about Tuesday’s match. “We just got to stay mentally positive and strong. We can’t get so down on ourselves.”
