Kauai High School senior Aldhen Butac was so impressed with the Veterans Day observance at the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club, he adopted a part of it as his senior project.
“I first heard about the project from Mr. (Chuck) Brady,” Butac said. “I thought it was impressive — to invite guests to help assemble 100 boxes for soldiers in Afghanistan.”
Shana Andres, Kauai Marriott’s human resources manager, said the packing was just one phase of the resort’s Veterans Day observance. They also hosted a luncheon and showed, “An Untold Triumph,” a documentary by Noel Izon.
Clark Fassett of Broomfield, Colorado, was among the guests at the luncheon served under a canopy near the beachwalk.
“I have two sons in the service,” Fassett said. “I know how much these packages are appreciated because I got some while I was in the service.”
His wife Diane was appreciative of the Kauai Marriott’s gesture, of not only doing the package project, but of also honoring her husband at the luncheon.
“He got a free lunch,” said Diane Fassett, who helped pack three boxes with her husband. “The hotel was so gracious to honor him, and providing the opportunity for us to honor our soldiers who are away. We had to help.”
Darlene Huff of Columbia, Missouri, said she prays for the soldiers every night.
“This is special,” she said. “I pray for them each night and ask God to keep them safe. I told them this in the note I wrote. I had to help.”
