NAWILIWILI — Activity bristled at the Kauai Independent Food Bank facility in Nawiliwili this week in anticipation of Thanksgiving.
“It’s been very busy,” said Kelvin Moniz, KIFB executive director. “We had at least 71 seniors visit the facility (on Tuesday) and because the pumpkin pies came in, they all went home with Thanksgiving pies.”
The juggling act started early when the Kauai Marriott ohana arrived with a contribution that tipped the scales at 8,256 pounds.
George and Ann Corrigan of the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay were picking up food to deliver and help others enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.
“We were blessed this year,” said George Corrigan.
He said John Ferry and Coldwell Bankers donated 54 canned hams.
“Add the potatoes and vegetables and at least 136 people are having a nice meal for Thanksgiving,” George said.
A couple from Vancouver, Canada arrived to donate a turkey.
“We had our Thanksgiving in October,” said Eileen Newcombe with her husband Gary. “Besides, this bird is too big for just the two of us. We thought someone else could have a better Thanksgiving.”
The KIFB Holiday Food and Fund Drive continues through Dec. 31. Its goal is 40,000 pounds of food and $40,000. People can contribute at any of the fire stations on Kauai, or at KIFB, 3285 Waapa Road in Nawiliwili.
“With the huge contribution from the Marriott, our food pound goal is very close,” Moniz said. “We still have a way to go, though.”
