LIHUE — A Lihue man was arraigned on 12 felony counts of sexual assault on Monday in 5th Circuit Court.
Roy Lee Gonsalves, 43, was arrested on June 24 and charged with 10 counts of third-degree sexual assault, one count of attempted first-degree sexual assault, and one count of first-degree sexual assault.
The arrest followed a felony information complaint on June 12.
The complaining victim, who is now an adult, was a minor under the age of 14 years old at the time the alleged offenses occurred between June 1, 2005, and June 21, 2007. Gonsalves has one prior misdemeanor criminal contempt of court conviction in Kauai District Court on June 30, 1995.
County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Arin asked the court to inquire as to the defendant’s eligibility to be represented by the public defender’s office after posting $200,000 for bail.
State Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Samuel Jajich replied that the defendant does qualify for services.
Judge Kathleen Watanabe scheduled a jury trial date for March 9, 2015.
