LIHUE — The Garden Island Motorcycle Club and Kauai Motorcycle Racing Association will host a Holiday Charity Poker Scramble Sunday in Omao to raise funds for three Kauai residents who are either battling or have lost their lives to cancer.
“The support so far has been enormous,” GIMC president and event organizer Bertram Almeida. “People coming together to help others on Kauai.”
Anahola resident Cherise Carvalho, 35, was diagnosed in May with stage four colon cancer. Calvin Braun, 49, of Lihue, recently had robotic surgery for stage three prostate cancer and is set to begin radiation treatment, according to Almeida.
The third beneficiary, Miescha Rathbone, died from cancer last month.
Proceeds will help pay for the three families’ mounting medical bills, as well as go toward the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.
“Sometimes positive energy can make a difference in somebody’s life,” Almeida said.
The event will be held at Kahili Mountain and begins with registration at 7 a.m., with the race kicking off at 9 a.m. Doors open at 6:30 a.m.
Registration is $35 for adults, $25 for children 12 and younger, and includes lunch. Spectators can also support the cause by purchasing a plate lunch at the race for $5.
Riders and spectators are also encouraged to bring a minimum of two canned goods to benefit the Kauai Independent Food Bank.
