LIHUE — Allan A. Smith, chairman of the board of directors of Kauai Island Utility Cooperative, resigned to accept a position with a Kauai agribusiness company.
Smith served on the board since 2007 and as chairman since 2013. He has been hired as infrastructure manager of Syngenta Hawaii’s operation in Kekaha.
He said Wednesday he is most proud to have been part of a great group of individuals at KIUC.
“The board members and KIUC employees are real and caring people, who are strategically focused and are making it happen as fast as possible,” he said.
Smith’s resignation from the KIUC board, announced Tuesday, is effective immediately.
A longtime agricultural and business leader on Kauai, Smith said he determined that it would be difficult to balance his commitment to KIUC with the time required by his new position.
“I’m proud of what KIUC has accomplished and proud of the ambitious goals we have set for the future,” Smith said in a release. “While it was a hard decision to step down, I’m confident that the cooperative will continue its leadership in pursuing cleaner, cheaper renewable energy.”
Under the cooperative’s bylaws, vacancies for unexpired terms on the board are filled by an appointment by the remaining directors. Smith’s term expires in 2016.
Vice Chairman Jan TenBruggencate will serve as chairman.
KIUC spokesman Jim Kelly said there isn’t a timeframe for when a new member will be appointed. The next board meeting is scheduled for Dec. 16.
