LIHUE — Annabella Thompson, 5, could not wait, tugging at her mother’s sleeve while pointing out a hibiscus specimen Saturday.
Thompson was a volunteer at the Keiki Planting Zone sponsored by No Ka Oi Landscaping at the Arbor Day Tree Giveaway and hosted by the Kauai Landscape Industry Council at the Kmart parking lot.
While Thompson guarded her prized hibiscus, a growing line of people awaited the signal to enter the fenced-off area where more than 1,200 plants, trees and shrubs waited to be selected.
Ambyr Mokiao-Lee of the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife, was helping Maya Sahut-Henry, 7, with her project.
“We have the 46th Annual Arbor Day Native Plant Sale Friday,” Mokiao-Lee said. “It’s going to take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pua Loke Field Nursery located at 4398D Pua Loke Street, behind the Department of Water.”
To get to the free trees, limited to three per person, people milled through educational booths manned by representatives from the Kauai Endangered Seabird Recovery Project, RC&D Forestry Committee, the Kokee Resource Conservation Program, National Tropical Botanical Garden, DOFAW — Natural Area Reserve System, Kauai Invasive Species Committee, Plant Pono, Kauai Native Plant Society, the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources Master Gardeners, and others.
Keiki were offered the opportunity to repot their choices at the Keiki Planting Zone, hosted by the plant and landscape specialists at No Ka Oi Plants.
