PUA LOKE — There was not the surge of customers traditionally found at the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife annual Arbor Day Native Plant sale Friday at the Pua Loke arboretum.
But those who came to shop were pleasantly surprised.
“I came to look for some Mamaki to replace mine which died,” said Lionel Rodrigues. “And, I want to look at the native hibiscus which grows in the drylands.”
After browsing through the offerings which included two federally endangered species, Rodrigues was pleasantly surprised to discover the maile specimens.
“I have to watch the budget,” Rodrigues said. “I only have so much to spend, but I can get the maile, too.”
