PUHI — A fundraiser is underway to send students to the Student Television Network convention this spring in San Diego.
“It costs about $1,500 for each student to attend,” said Kevin Matsunaga, instructor for the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School media class. “We’re not paying for everything, but we’re trying to help them with as much of the travel expenses as we can.”
More than a thousand tickets were sold for the CKTV fundraising breakfast at the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School cafeteria Sunday morning.
The fundraising breakfast comes on the heels of craft fairs and other events by students and parents.
“This is a great opportunity for the students,” Matsunaga said. “Participating in the STN convention, the students are able to compete with other middle school students from around the nation, and even from Hawaii. They get to see how they stack up against some of the top students.”
Matsunaga said students also form bonds with other students from schools around the country, carrying their friendships beyond the convention.
The CKTV group schedules special related tours in and around the convention site areas, Matsunaga said. This year, the students will be visiting the media department at the University of Southern California, and also a tour at San Diego State University as well as a tour of Universal Studios.
“A final benefit is being able to meet with some of the industry’s top leaders and having the opportunity to interact with them,” he said.
