Kaisa Ishikawa of the Kauai High School girls wrestling team was the sole Red Raider to place at the Paani Wahine Challenge which wrapped up Saturday on Oahu.
Ishikawa, wrestling in the 102-pound A bracket, finished the tournament in fourth place, sporting a 2-2 overall record.
She opened her bid with a bye before being taken out on a fall by Skye Sakashita of Punahou. The fall relegated Ishikawa to the consolation bracket where she opened with a bye before advancing to the consolation semis past Deja Inouye-Ramos of Radford. She was taken out by Alexis Nelson of Waianae with a pin at the 2:36 mark for her fourth place finish. Nelson earned third.
Coach Mac Pigott, the Kauai Interscholastic Federation wrestling coordinator, said of the seven girls, three of the girls were in the A bracket and four of them were first-year wrestlers in the B bracket.
Nika Tapucol, wrestling in the 122-pound A bracket, was taken out by Allie Mahoe of Kapolei on a pin. Tapucol got pinned in the consolation by Kallie Kron of Lahainaluna.
Jessica Dinnie, wrestling in the 155-pound A bracket, lost her opening round to Angelyn Basa of Mililani with a pin. Dinnie droppedout in the consolation after being pinned by Aailyah Wright of Campbell.
Jordan Kahananui, grappling in the 112-pound B bracket, lost her opening round to Jade Rickard of Lahainaluna on a fall, finishing with an 0-2 record after being taken out on a fall by Syndnee Aiwohi of Waianae.
Naia Manintin, wrestling in the 138-pound B bracket, lost her opening big to Serena Morales of Del Oro on a 6-3 decision, being relegated to the consolation where she was taken out by Jayla Alonzo-Estrada of Kamehameha Schools-Big Island on a fall.
Sarah Matsunaga, wrestling in the 155-pound B bracket, dropped her opening round to Ailani Lanoza of Lahainaluna on a fall, moving to the consolation bracket where she succumbed to Iwa Worthington of Pac 5 on a fall.
Pigott said there were some discrepancies in Briana Kaneshiro’s bracket, the first-time Kauai wrestler dropping her opening round to Ivory Ayers of Keaau. She moved to the consolation bracket where she dropped her match to Kayla Mae Cuizon of Campbell in the Round of 8.
The KIF wrestling season, working through weight monitoring on Jan. 13, will open its first tournament, starting at 10 a.m. Jan. 31 at Kapaa High School.
