Two Kauai High School wrestlers were able to advance beyond their opening rounds, but fell short of the finals at the Officials tournament on Oahu Saturday.
Ishikawa, one of two girls making the preseason match, advanced to the quarterfinals of the 102 division where she was pinned by Leilehua’s Brianna Leong at 2:28. Leong beat her teammate Iverly Navarro 5:06 in the semis. Ishikawa finished with a 1-2 tournament record.
Jordan Kahananui, the second Kauai girl, dropped in the 112 quarterfinals after being taken out by Moanaluna B’s Haahula Crisostomo in the 2:39 mark.
Madison Leanio, grappling in the 145 division, opened with a pinfall over Radford’s Wendell Tungpalan at the 2:28 mark before dropping to Conner Barfield of Punahou in the quarterfinals. Leanio finished with a 2-2 tournament record.
Corey Agena, one of two Waimea boys, dropped his opening bout in the 113 division to Blake Tadaki of Castle at the 1:25 mark.
Ian Garcia, the second grappler from Waimea, came up short on points, 2-9 in the 220 division against Kaumana Garcia of Baldwin High School.
Kauai’s Bryzan Cadiz, wrestling in the 126 division, dropped his opening bout to Jake Ballesteros of Lanai at the 2:43 mark, Ballesteros going out in the quarterfinals of the division to Jake Nakasone of Iolani.
Bryson Yoro of Kauai, grappling in the 138 division, dropped his opener to Justin Fukuhara of Punahou B at the 3:05 mark and Braycyn Aviguetero of Kauai dropped his opening bout to Hokupa Kahookaulana of Keaau at the 1:36 mark in the 170 division.
Coach Mac Pigot, the Kauai Interscholastic Federation wrestling tournament director, said there were approximately 500 wrestlers representing 35 high schools from Hawaii and one Mainland school participating at the Oahu tournament.
