The KCC Instrumental Ensembles present their winter concerts this weekend and next at the KCC Performing Arts Center. Admission is free to both concerts, with donations gratefully accepted at the door. This week’s program will be tonight at 7 and will feature the Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensemble. The Symphony Orchestra will present their program next week on Friday, also at 7 p.m.
Dave Braun, Jazz Ensemble director, writes that his group will feature a broad cross-section of the community, from a 94-year-old trombonist to an 18-year old college freshman.
“We are looking for more musicians next semester to join our jazz ensemble and continue their study of improvisation and performance in the big band style,” Braun said. “We will be having high school students join our ensemble and are looking for more members. This is also the first year I am conducting this group, and I am excited to bring my experience from Chicago to the KCC Jazz Ensemble.”
Tomorrow night’s program will include “Spain” by Chick Corea, “One O’clock Jump” by Count Basie, “Rhapsody in Blue” by George Gershwin, “How High the Moon” by Morgan Lewis and Nancy Hamilton, and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” by George and Ira Gershwin. A journalism presentation by Jim Kelley, former managing editor of the Honolulu Advertiser, will be held 1 p.m. Friday in the KCC Campus Life Center, room 212.
Titled “How a Newspaper Handles Controversy in a Polarized Community: A Journalist’s Perspective,” Kelly’s presentation will focus on how the story-assignment process works, and how newsrooms can take steps to ensure balance and fairness in covering stories that have the potential to polarize the community. KCC students Nicholas Herrmann, Amber Mokelke, Marcus Yamaguchi, and Brennen Sprenger presented their work at the Hawaii Space Grant Consortium Symposium on Nov. 22 at Honolulu Community College. The students are designing, assembling, and programming a scientific payload for a RockSat X suborbital mission, to be launched this summer at Wallops Flight Facility, Virginia. The students are part of project Imua, funded by NASA, which involves a coalition of four UH community colleges established to design and build payloads for space launch. Kauai Community College is designing the science payload under the mentorship of Dr. Georgeanne Purvinis and Mr. Stu Burley.
