LIHUE — A flash flood warning for the island of Kauai is in effect until 6:45 p.m. today.
The National Weather Service issued the warning as an upper level disturbance lingers above the island, causing as much as nine inches of rainfall in the mountains and three to six inches on the North Shore slopes.
A flash flood warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams, roads and low-lying areas. Do not cross fast-flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot.
No road closures have been reported yet on Kauai. The Hanalei River gauge shows a steady rise with the potential for flooding along Kuhio Highway near the Hanalei Bridge.
Ponding, low visibility and other hazardous driving conditions are expected. If you must drive, do so with extreme caution.
National Weather Service officials said the warning may be extended or modified as conditions develop.
