Recent arrival not a good choice for review commission
Today, Allan Parachini will be considered by the Kauai County Council for nomination for County Charter Review Commission.
I am quite surprised by the choice for this recent arrival to Kauai who has a brilliant but contentious history in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Times and as spokesman for the Los Angeles Superior Court. A simple Google search on his name brings forward an impressive list of articles that concern his participation with the reporting of celebrity news as it pertains to the courts. A look at the comment fields with cries of accusations of his foul play in the articles show that he had a similar pattern in Los Angeles as he has begun to demonstrate on Kauai.
His alignment with Kauai’s chemical seed industry has been clear with his championing the industry while disparaging the concerned citizens with false presumptive statements — as fact — in our newspaper. On Facebook, he is a regular provocateur on the walls and news feeds of people whom he would like to undermine, my own campaign included.
The Kauai County Charter is our core document which has a similar purpose of a constitution for the islands of Niihau and Kauai. There is a very important responsibility in reviewing and recommending potential changes. Having an in-depth understanding of the relationships and history of Kauai provides an important foundation that is central to responsibly managing governance for the residents of our islands. Of the 68,000 people on this island, why was this man chosen at the very start of this council period? We have so many wise and capable citizens who are more appropriate for the task. The County Council will discredit itself as being fair and balanced if it endorses this individual who represents a clear bias to constrain and limit the citizen movements against the pesticides being used on the island. I do not support his nomination.

Museum a wonderful friend on Kauai
Remember the theme song from “Cheers,” that once popular TV program? “… You want to go where everybody knows your name…” We have a place like that on Kauai at the Kauai Museum (sans the bar stools and drinks).
It’s with great gratitude that I extend heartfelt thanks to everyone at our Kauai Museum for their wonderfully generous gesture of allowing local author Aggie Marti-Kini to have a book signing of “ANAHOLA: Kauai’s Mystic Hawaiian Village” (to benefit Minette Fernandez, also of Anahola) at the Museum’s recent ‘Ohana Day, which they offer to the community most months. Gratefulness is also extended to Aggie Marti-Kini who donated all proceeds to Minette, who is suffering from heart failure.
If you are not a member of the Kauai Museum, you should consider supporting them. They are one of those quiet Kauai resources which are always there and so enrich our island community! They are worthy of support — especially at this time of year of giving — and they truly know our names and strive to provide innovative programming for all age groups. They bring us artist and author showings and signings, the annual May Day is Lei Day celebration, “Living Treasures” of deserving, notable Kauai Community Members, Paina delectables, children’s school tours and programming, and the annual Christmas craft fair — just to name a few!
