LIHUE — A Lihue tuxedo rental company was named an Elite Retailer of the Year by its national supplier, Jim’s Formal Wear.
The honor came in November, recognizing Robert’s Kauai as a tuxedo rental outlet since 2008. It recognizes Robert’s as a standout business in a nationwide formalwear distribution network of 6,000 independent retailers.
“It’s kind of a big deal because nobody dresses up here,” said Milton Robert Ozaki, president of Robert’s of Kauai and Robert’s Jewelry stores in Lihue and Hanapepe.
It is the first time the store received the honor. His father, Robert Ozaku, opened the family business 68 years ago and they employ around nine people at both stores.
Ozaku placed the plaque in the window where it blends well with his other Kauai business awards. He appreciated that a Kauai business would stand out for such a small market, but appreciated it even more knowing how far the business has come in providing the service for which they are now recognized.
“We have been renting tuxedos for almost 60 years,” Ozaku said. “We consider ourselves the most experienced and qualified source for tuxedos because we have been doing it for so long.”
The award emphasizes attention to detail and for and exceptional customer service from companies that provide formal rentals for the biggest moments in people’s lives — weddings, proms and other black tie events. It is also based on rental volume and order accuracy based on tuxedos that came back for corrections.
“There is peace of mind for the customer because we know what we are doing after so many years,” Ozaku said. “In the old days, it was a different story, where we were rushing in and out with last-minute changes and today its like clockwork.”
A statement from Steve Davis, president and CEO or Jim’s Formal Wear, said the Elite Retailers of the Year recipients are among the best when it comes to men’s formalwear rental and sales.
