Kudos to Larry Rivera for those many years of performing at the Kukui Grove Center! Friday was his farewell show at the mall (Charlie Perreira — Larry wrote a song about him — said he’ll still come to the Kauai Museum Saturdays).
Over on the other side of the island, kudos to Stacy Sproat-Beck and the Waipa Foundation on a great kalo festival (got to meet Eric Kaaumoana — Charlie said he plays a mean washtub (Japanese call it tarai) bass – and Pat Cockett of Na Pali).
While paying tribute to kalo, it was nice to see the banner of Lono and the alter for the makahiki at the Halulu Fishpond and it was nice to see all the people like Steve and Sylvia Fuji, Carla Dusenberry, Nadine Horner, and more make the trek over the bridge to Patrick Ching country.
Hats off to Melissa Reeder of Malama Aina Foundation, Hoopili Program, and Jamie Shishido (she traces roots to Makaweli) for coming over from Honolulu and working with people on creating wind turbines using biomimicry.
