LIHUE — At 9:35 a.m. on Monday, Ron Wiley of KONG Radio announced live on air the winner of the 2014 Holiday Gift Guide Las Vegas Giveaway.
But that person didn’t call within the 9 minutes and 35 seconds allowed to claim the prize.
So, Wiley drew another name — Kahea McCarthy.
After getting off work at 5:30 that morning, however, McCarthy had gone to sleep. She didn’t hear the announcement, but instead had asked her boyfriend, Keola Reyes, and others to tune in just in case her name was called.
“I had 36 missed calls,” she remembered when she woke up. “I was in a dead sleep.”
Thanks to the incessant ringing of her phone, she called into KONG in time to claim her prize. Now, she and Reyes are headed to “Sin City.” It will be their second all-expenses-paid trip to Vegas in a row, after winning a different Vegas trip back in September.
“I can’t believe it,” McCarthy said Wednesday. “We love Vegas.”
Her name was the second drawn of 332 total entries. The prize is a five-night trip for two.
McCarthy said her family loves baseball, and she was initially planning to use the prize to attend the 2015 Triple Crown Fall Nationals before learning the trip had to be taken before August.
“We usually try to go in like March, when it’s a little bit cooler,” she said. “My dad’s sisters live up there so we like to go up there and see family.”
In addition to seeing the Jabbawockeez, the all-male hip hop dance crew, McCarthy said she plans to play her favorite game of chance — bingo.
“I always tell my family if I’m missing and they can’t find me, I’ll be at the Plaza playing bingo,” she laughed.
Giveaway sponsors included Oahu Publications, Inc., KONG Radio and Kauai Village Shopping Center.
