Mokihana Aquatics swimmer Madeline “Maddie” Hoesel finished with three improvements in four events she swam in, and upgraded a “Splash” time to a HIAA time standard over the weekend in Oahu.
Those accomplishments earned her the Mokihana Aquatics Swimmer of the Meet honors at the Ken Suenaga Invitational Swim Meet, the last major Short Course Invitational for the year, at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center.
“Congratulations to Maddie in her first Invitational,” said Mokihana coach Orlando “O” Anaya in an email. “She just missed a best time in the 50 Freestyle by .28 second. Almost a ‘perfect’ meet for her in her first major competition.”
Hoesel posted improvements in the Girls 11-12 100 Free (1:07.70) for a .86 second gain over her seeded swim, the 50 Backstroke (37.96) for a 1.64 second improvement, and in the 200 Freestyle (2:29.88) for a 6.66 second improvement.
“She had a ‘breakout’ swim in her 200 Free, setting a personal best by more than six seconds,” Anaya said. “Maddie just made one year swimming with Mokihana last month. What a great way to start at the next level.”
Nevaeh Ibanez accompanied Hoesel to the Ken Suenaga meet, coached by Kelsey Tanaka after Anaya was medically unable to be at the meet.
Anaya said not only the swimmers were posed with challenges, Tanaka was also faced with an hour delay to Oahu Saturday morning, but went on to do an “outstanding job as coach.”
Ibanez posted one personal best in 10 events swimming, her biggest achievement coming in the Female 10 and Under 100 Individual Medley where she touched at 1:31.29 for a 9.37 second improvement.
“Nevaeh did a little better than expected in the 100 IM,” Anaya said. “She made a new HIAA time. She represented Mokihana well with class and humility.”
