Finances continue to be a problem for many people during the holidays.
Edward has had a financially difficult year due to unexpected medical issues. Large co-pays and extra medications have really taken a toll on his already tight budget. Not only does he not have any money for extras, but sometimes has to decide which utility will be paid on time and which one has to wait. Edward feels 2015 will be a better year but the holiday season is looking bleak. A gift card would brighten things up for him.
Mrs. Grant, who is 80 years old, lives with her family. She receives a very modest pension which helps to pay for the house rent. Some of the family members are unemployed so she has been contributing more to other household expenses, which means she is left with hardly any to spend for herself.
These are some of stories of those who will receive help through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share stories of families facing challenges who could use a little holiday cheer. Donations to the Christmas Fund will be distributed by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make their wishes come true. Each donated dollar is carefully recorded, accounted for and spent wisely. Volunteers make this program a reality. There are no paid administrators. Donations go to help individuals and families. The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund was established in the early 1980s. Yoshiko “Dimples” Kano has been the longtime chair of the Christmas Fund Committee. Organizers say donations are off to a strong start and they appreciate all contributions.
Anyone making a donation of $50 or more can have their picture presenting the check published in TGI. Only monetary donations can be accepted. Checks, payable to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766.

– Heather is a 14-month-old child with numerous medical concerns; her surgeries have resulted in serious developmental delays. Due to frequent appointments with medical specialists on Oahu, the family is under financial strain. The mother is a single parent and needs to stay home to care for Heather.
