WAILUA — The Kauai Pop Warner Football League hosted a dozen scholar-athletes and their families to a scholarship banquet Monday at the Over Par Grill & Bar at the Wailua Golf Course.
“We not only play football and cheer,” said Millie Ah Hee, the KPWFL scholastic chair. “We recognize our scholar-athletes for their hard work in school.”
Scholar-athletes qualify by maintaining at least 96 points or better, Ah Hee said. One of her responsibilities is working with the schools as well as checking on the students’ academic standings.
“They need to learn early,” she said. “When they go to high school, they need to maintain their grade-point averages to participate, and in college, they need to maintain academic standards as well.”
The Hanapepe Colts association had the greatest number of scholar-athletes with six of the 12 named, including Kaira Kelekoma, Makoa Vanaman, Ashlyn Agena, Zyana Vea, Pookela Camarillo and Moani Felix-Keamoai.
The Kekaha Titans fielded two scholar-athletes including Barak Aviguetero and Chloe Hatcher. Lihue Patriots saw Keane Tibon and Blake Probasco holding high academic honors, with Wade Pimsaguan of the Koloa Redskins and Sam Odell of the Kapaa Eagles rounding out this year’s outstanding scholar-athletes.
Ah Hee said this year is the second year KPWFL has acknowledge and honored the hard work put out by the league’s student athletes.
The tackle football season for KPWFL ended last week with the two-day Harold Naumu Bowl and the Shriners game.
