PUHI — Kauai’s Wailana Gandeza had a hat trick, or three goals scored, to lead the Red Raiders to a 6-0 win over Island School Wednesday afternoon at the Voyagers’ facility on the Puhi campus.
“Wailana’s improved a lot,” said Kauai coach Kevin Devitt. “She’s keeping the ball low and as a result, getting in the net more, instead of out of the net.”
Gandeza opened the action early followed by Lyndsie Kashima finding the net nearly 30 minutes into play.
Just about a minute later, Gandeza netted her second goal, getting an assist from Kashima.
Bailey Hanna got an opportunity up front, scoring the Raiders’ final goal just about a minute before the halftime whistle, the forward charge seeing the Voyager defender and goalkeeper getting mixed up with Hanna while the ball rolled into the folds for the 4-0 halftime lead.
“We changed things up,” Devitt said. “The girls are starting to play like we practice. They’re using things we use in practice.”
Kauai’s girls wrapped up the afternoon with a pair of second-half goals, Kawehi Taniguchi marking a goal on an assist from Aleigha “Red” Scovel and Gandeza marking her third goal in the second half for the 6-0 final.
“We moved the girls around so they could experience playing different positions,” Devitt said. “With this win, I think we’re still in the lead since we have no losses. We have a tie, but Kapaa has a loss and are right on us. Our next game, Wednesday is huge.”
