Humans colonizing the Hawaiian Islands destroyed bird habitats and introduced many alien species resulting in several native forest bird species going extinct, and those which remain live only in the most pristine mountain areas.
“Kauai Forest Birds: Rise, Fall and Recovery of Biodiversity” will be presented by Lisa “Cali” Crampton, leader of the Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project, Thursday at the Hanapepe Public Library.
“Increasing public awareness of these little-known birds and the threats they face is a key component of our conservation strategy,” Crampton said.
The public is invited to the free lecture at 6 p.m. presented by the Friends of the Hanapepe Public Library and the Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project.
Crampton will discuss the evolution, endangerment and conservation efforts of the group of species which are unique to Kauai, once considered a tropical paradise for native birds.
