Emi Schaefer
Emi Doi Schaefer of Kalaheo passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on Jan. 3, 2015, at the age of 90. She was born in Kalaheo, Kauai on Feb. 18, 1924. She was a store clerk at Doi Store (family ran business) and later at Tanaka Plumbing before retiring.
She is preceded in death by her husband, John Philip Schaefer of 70 years and her parents Raisuke and Kikuya Doi. Also preceded in death is brothers Toshio, Kenji, Isami and Raiso Doi and sisters, Asako Yamada, Shegako Kawakami, Yoshiko Matsumoto and Shizuko Tanaka.
She is survived by son Jace (Marilyn) Schaefer of Kauai and daughter Geraldine Tom (Herbert) of Oahu. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A private celebration of her life will be held at Kauai Veteran’s Cemetery on Feb. 7, 2015, where she will rejoin her husband John. Family requests no flowers and no koden.

Laura Silva
Laura C. Silva of Kalaheo, Kauai passed away on Jan. 16, 2015, at her home in Kalaheo at the age of 93. Born on Sept. 6, 1921, in Kalaheo, Kauai, She was a Homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband Antone S. Silva and her two sons Russell A Silva and Jeffery J. Silva.
She is survived by her daughters, Audrey Silva (Gene Mendes), Laureen (Howard) Ranis; Son: Randy (Nani) Silva; Daughter-in-law: Adele Silva, Brother: Walter Caldeira, 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Church Cemetery in Kalaheo.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Mabel Char
Mabel Puanani Char of Waimea, passed away at KVMH on Jan. 11, 2015, at the age of 87.
Born on June 6, 1927, in Lihue, Kauai, she was an entertainer with Smith’s Boat.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Barnie K. Char; 5 brothers, Abraham Akuna, Daniel Akuna, George Malaia, Bernard Malaia, and Kenneth Malaia; and sister, Rusty Peters.
She is survived by her 3 sons, Russell (Marilyn) Char of Poipu, Rawlins (Mila) Char of Kekaha, and Barnie K. (Joy Grindley) Char of Hauula; 5 daughters, Jackie (Mark) Gray of West Jordan, Utah, Eula Mae (Tama) Taala of Waimea, Apryle Wong of Laie, Sue Ann (Mark) Texeira of Hanapepe, and Cheryle Anne (Danny) Woolsey of Colorado; 29 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brother, Gordon”Lani” Akuna of Honolulu; 3 sisters, Lillian Park of Georgia, Elsie Kali of Las Vegas, and Beverly Kahaleoumi of Kauai; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at 9 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints (Mormon) in Kekaha. Services will be at 11 a.m., followed by a burial at the Kauai Veteran’s Cemetery in Hanapepe.

Dwayne Kusaka
Dwayne “Boogie” Kusaka passed away on Jan. 5, 2015, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Born on August 30, 1959, in Lihue Kauai, he was a loving father, an avid fisherman, a great roofer, and a loyal friend and a graduate of Kauai High School.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Jose and Lilly Estacio, and paternal grandparents Robert and Masaji Kusaka.
He is survived by his fiancé, Jamelyn Padre, 3 children, Jaylynn, Dwayne, and Jayde; parents Yuki and Fely Kusaka, sister Norine, brother and best friend Royden (Weena) and niece Taylor. James and Deborah Padre, Uncles, Charles (Maryanne) and Henry (Lynn), Aunts, Helen Teramoto, Katherine (Lamont) Shadowens, Dorothy Kikuta, Chieko (Harry) Ehara, several cousins, and close family friends, Val Nagano, Marianelle Hawelu, Randolph and Caleb Jimenez.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with visitation at 8:30 a.m. and Mass at 10 a.m.
Choji Shimabukuro
Choji Shimabukuro of Eleele, passed away on Jan. 19, 2015, at KVMH at the age of 93. Born on April 5, 1921, in Koloa, Kauai he was a lifelong employee of McBryde Sugar Company.
He is preceded in death by his two brothers, Choichi and Tsuneo; and five sisters, Hiroko Itokazu, Chiyo Shimabukuro, Naeko Kuwaye, Akiko Miyashiro and Kiyoko Shimabukuro.
He is survived by his wife, Shizuko Shimabukuro; son George (Diane) Shimabukuro of California; daughters, Charlotte (Walter) Yasumoto of Wailua and Jo Ann Harada of California; 2 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Yoshiko Shimabukuro of Eleele and Takeko (Akira) Oyakawa of Honolulu.
Private services were held, no koden.

Daniel Torre
Daniel dela Torre of Kapaa, previously of Kekaha, passed away in Garden Isle Health Care on Jan. 24, 2015, at the age of 87. He was born in Kekaha, Kauai on Dec. 29, 1927, and retired after 43 years with Kekaha Sugar Company as a Controller.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine “Sefa”, daughter Alison (Michael) Fernandes; son, Gary (Carol) dela Torre; 5 grandchildren, Levi (JoAnne) Fernandes, Jocelyn (Chad) Burch, Leland Fernandes, Amanda (Evan) Judd and Daniel “Jake” (Gabriella) dela Torre; 2 great-grandchildren, Sadie Burch, Gustavus Fernandes; brother, Jody (Emily) dela Torre; sister, Lillian (Bill) Whalers; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church with visitation from 9 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 11 a.m.
Kauai Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the dela Torre family with arrangements.
Mary Costales
Mary T. Costales of Kekaha, Kauai passed away on Jan. 17, 2015, at Queen’s Medical Center at the age of 90. Born on Feb. 16, 1924, in Eleele, Kauai. She was a Retired Pineapple Trimmer for Kauai Pineapple Cannery in Lawai, Kauai.
Preceded in death by her husband Jose Costales, Sr., parents; Pailuno and Juana Tulliano; son Patrick Costales and great-grandson Shayden Csigi.
She is survived by her sons, Martin (Haunani) Costales, Ernest Costales, Jose (Rosemarie) Costales, Jr.; sister: Caroline Unciano, daughter in Law: Sue Costales, 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at St. Theresa’s Church in Kekaha from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Where mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Inurnment to follow at Kekaha Public Cemetery.

Gregoria Planas
Gregoria Esona Planas passed away on Jan. 18, 2015, at her residence in Kapaa, at the age of 85. Born on March 12, 1929, in Waimea, Kauai, she was a retired housekeeping manager with Kauai Beach Boy Resort.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Florentino Esona and Manuela Esona; brothers, Luciano Esona and Ambrosio de Lota; and sisters, Maxima (Conrado) Caspillo of Kapaa and Bernadette (Ben) Dakai of Kilauea.
She is survived by her two sons, Leslie (Dina) of Kapaa and Gregory (Laurie) of Kapaa; two daughters, Bridget (Don) Evans of Arizona and Georgia (Gerard) Silva of Kalaheo; 2 brothers, Salvador (Carrie) Esona of San Jose, California, and Raymond (Rose) Esona of Kilauea; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai at 10 a.m. Services will begin at 11 a.m. The family suggests casual attire.

Louise Yates
Louise A.K. (Field) Yates of Kapaa, passed away on Jan. 16, 2015, at home surrounded by loved ones, at the age of 73. Born on Oct. 14, 1941, in Honolulu, she was a pathology transcriptionist with Wilcox Hospital and Clinical Labs Hawaii.
She is survived by her daughters, Marcia (Michael) Buratti of Kapaa and Monica Ka’auwai of Kapaa; four grandchildren, Kalanikauleleiaiwi Ka’auwai, and Kalani, Rachel, and Emma Buratti; brother, David Field of Las Vegas, Nevada; Sister Jewell Coté of Kamuela, Hawaii; numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Louise’s life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at the All Saints Episcopal Church at 9 a.m., officiated by Rev. Robin Taylor. Service begins at 10 a.m., with a private inurnment and refreshments to follow.
