PUHI — Kapaa’s April Barnes found the net twice in the second half to ice a 3-1 win for the Warriors girls soccer team Saturday at the Island School field.
“The girls were passing today, so that was good,” said Kapaa coach Kevin Cram. “This is still a young team so they have to realize that if they drop down, their teammates are there to finish the job. Any game experience they can get is only going to help them down the road.”
Playing in the crisp aftermath of Friday’s storm, both teams battled on the wet grass before Kapaa found its edge when Vanessa Hernandez hit the net from the outside in the 26th minute for the 1-0 lead at the intermission.
Coming off the break, Barnes gave coach Mytra McKeague her early goal, striking within the first minute of play (41st minute). Barnes iced the win in the 67th minute for her second goal, giving Kapaa its third goal of the day.
As the clock wound down, Island School found the net in traffic as Jade Murphy came out with the goal in the 78th minute for the final.
“This is the same situation we faced against Kauai,” said Island School coach Colby Ayonon. “We are a slim team, and today, after injuries, we had no bench. The girls weren’t ready to play until the final 10 minutes.”
The win sets the stage for a Wednesday showdown against Kauai High School at Vidinha Stadium. It will be the first time the teams face off this season.
The varsity boys will kick off at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity girls starting at 7 p.m. This will be the first outing for the boys teams.
Island School will make the trip to Hanapepe Stadium to face off against Waimea with the varsity boys kicking off at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity girls starting at 7 p.m.
