As the close of 2014 swept by in a deluge of rain, winds and cold-weather, it was with glee that the local contingent of outrigger canoes, Surfski, standup, prone and rudderless canoe paddlers converged for the inaugural 2015 race Sunday.
As the close of 2014 swept by in a deluge of rain, winds and cold-weather, it was with glee that the local contingent of outrigger canoes, Surfski, standup, prone and rudderless canoe paddlers converged for the inaugural 2015 race Sunday.
For the visiting competitors from Sweden, in the surf ski division, delight showed on their faces. It was proving to be a perfect day for competitive paddling.
The committee of the Kauai Hoe Waa (www.kauaihoewaa.org) works hard consistently through the year to provide good quality events with solid water safety, the best possible race courses based on current weather conditions, and food and beverages at the finish line to boot.
Yesterday’s race proved to be a total winner. Everyone who showed up to support the race would agree.
For the families and friends, who are invaluable in making these events unfold successfully, the beautiful weather, calm seas and the presence of whales and dolphins at the start were reward enough for their efforts.
On the start line, many of the regulars showed their faces but with the perfect race conditions many new faces were seen, too.
The race began in very comfortable conditions, fairly flat with the wind very light out of the north. As the competitors made their way south, slowly the winds and wind swell increased to a very enjoyable level. It was one of those days when beginners felt very comfortable and the experienced were having a great time, too.
Ultimately, the visitors took line honors in 52 minutes, 21 seconds with Paul Rosenquist from Sweden crossing 4 seconds ahead of the first local paddler.
