The Kapaa High School boys and mixed teams are undefeated following three Kauai Interscholastic Federation outrigger canoe paddling races.
Shizuo Santos, Johnny Levinthol, Maka Ahloo, Myles Mendoza, Chaz Pacleb and Nainoa Santos make up the Warrior boys team that dominated the Saturday long distance race with a first finish run of 26 minutes, 44 seconds over the four-mile course.
Autumn Begleg, Levinthol, Ahloo, Santos, Samantha Gilbert and Brylyn Aiwohi form the Warrior mixed varsity team slipped across the line on a 27:18 paddle, followed about 1 minute back by the Waimea team at 28:52.
Both squads lead the standings with 12 cumulative points.
The Kauai High School girls varsity squad, by virtue of its first finish at 32:28, controls the cumulative division standings with nine points.
Kapaa High School, finishing Saturday’s race nearly a minute back of the Raiders at 33:24, challenges Kauai in the standings at seven points followed by Waimea at five points.
Waimea, a consistent second-place finisher since the start of the season, is second in the boys and mixed divisions with six points in each division.
The Menehune boys stopped the clock on a 27:51.87 showing, while its mixed team clocked in at 28:52.48 over the four-mile run.
w The Warriors’ junior varsity girls, including Chiara Fumagali, Alexis Ochoa, Kelly Kauai, Jazlyn Rapozo, Destinee Miyoshi and Selena Morita, was just a second faster than Kauai’s squad, stopping the clock at 17:09.06 over the two-mile run while the Raiders followed at 17:19.82.
The race in the JV boys was even tighter, the Warriors’ A team of Kanaki Harper, Edward Bernarbe, Kaimi Gonzalez, Kavika Beck, Kaiona Nakamura, and Adrian Aquino eking out a win on a 15:08.03 run, a mere .01 second ahead of Kauai’s A team (15:08.04).
The Red Raiders controlled the JV mixed division, making the two-mile run on a 16:50.01 paddle followed by the Kapaa A team at 17:41.40.
The KIF paddling regatta continues at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Wailua River.
Format is one mile with three turns for the varsity teams and half-mile for the JV teams.
