Kapaa wins one, ties one

LIHUE — Kapaa High School deadlocked Waimea in the boys’ match and exploded to a 5-0 shutout over the Menehune girls Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.

Waimea, coming off a 3-1 win over Island School on Wednesday, broke the ice in the 28th minute when Carl Mecham closed the door on a free kick for the 1-0 bulge which stood at the half.

Kapaa finally answered when Keale Lee’s net was settled in favor of the Warriors in the 56th minute.

Lee snagged the goal, but the line judge ruled offsides, nullying the goal. Following an officials’ conference, the goal was allowed and the clock ran out on the 1-1 deadlock.

On the girls’ court, Kapaa rotated its roster en route to a second half scoring explosion.

Warrior middle Aiyanah Walker broke the ice in the first half, finding the goal in the 36th minute on an assist from Temari Davis for the 1-0 lead at the break.

Coming off the bench, the Warriors struck early in the second half when Kailana Kaiminauao got an assist from Vanessa Hernandez to strike in the 44th minute. A second Kaiminauau/Hernandez score was disallowed on offsides.

Team captain Eryka Keoho, normally the strong defender, was pulled up for a solo shot from the right wing, netting a goal at the 50th minute.

Davis, after assisting Walker in the first half, got her own goal on an assist from Keoho at the 56th minute for the 4-0 margin, which stood until the final minute of play when Megan Devin’s foot launched a bomb from about 30 yards out for the final Kapaa goal.

Earlier in the day, Waimea boys junior varsity took a 2-1 edge over Kapaa, and the Kapaa girls JV were 8-0 victors over the JV Menehune girls.

Waimea next hosts Kauai High School on Wednesday at Hanapepe Stadium, the varsity boys kicking off at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity girls.

Kapaa High School will host Island School at Vidinha Stadium, the varsity boys starting at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity girls.
