LIHUE — Malama Kauai is offering a five-week Gardening Certificate training to the Anahola and surrounding community on Saturdays beginning Feb. 28.
The program will be at Kanuikapono Charter School and is supported by the Hawaii Farmers Union United, Kauai Chapter and the Bill Healy Foundation.
The schedule of classes includes:
– Feb. 28 — Garden Planning, Design and Plant Selection, with Ray Maki of Permaculture Kauai and Hawaii Farmers Union United
– March 8 — Soil, Compost, Mulching and Amendments, with John Parziale of Kauai Authentic Farms
– March 14 — Plants and Seeds, with Paul Massey of Regenerations International Botanical Garden
– March 21 — Pests and Common Garden Issues, with Matt Fields of Field Landscape Services
– March 28 — Garden Maintenance and Harvesting, with Jeff Giacobetti, Ike Aina Teacher at Kanuikapono and Owner/Operator of Alohalani Farm.
In exchange for the free training, participants are asked to commit to volunteering in the school gardens four hours per month for six months. Those who do not wish to volunteer may pay a fee of $50.
“This pilot project to see if this kind of offering helps both interested community members and the school garden programs simultaneously,” says Keone Kealoha, executive director of Malama Kauai.
