KILAUEA — The county’s Division II youth basketball is in full swing, with five games — four boys matches and one girls game — contested Saturday at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center.
Aloha State Warriors 30, Team Central 20
The Aloha State Warriors pulled ahead early and held off Team Central A for a 30-20 win in the day’s opener where Team Central’s Kurtis Fujito-Pascua bombed the rim from outside the three-point arc.
The Warriors’ Shazen Brede answered the bomb with one of his own while the defense held Team Central to Fujito-Pascua’s sole three points and the Warriors advanced with seven points to end the opening period.
Team Central answered the 23-6 halftime deficit with a 10-0 run in the fourth and fifth stanzas, but came up short at the final buzzer.
Kesomi Fonua topped the Warriors’ scoring with 11 points, getting help from Ofa Paua and Keon Orlando who each dropped six points.
Justin Faidley dropped six points with Braden Simao and Jaron Acantilado helping the effort with four points each.
Papalina 37, Kamikaze 14
Micah Matsunaga fired off three bombs from outside the three-point arc, all in the final period to try and answer the 25-1 halftime deficit.
But the effort fell short as Matsunaga finished with 11 of the Kamikaze’s 14 points in its 37-14 loss to Papalina.
Papalina fielded its own long baller as Isahn Ulanday dropped treys in the first, third and four frames, his only scores in the win and finishing with high-point honors at 12 points.
Ryan Banasihan added nine points in the victory with Christopher Cromartie finishing with seven points.
Girls Kauai Ballers 36, Team Lihue 22
Jaliyah Casem finished with a game-high 15 points to lead the Kauai Ballers to a 36-22 win over Team Lihue who got eight points apiece from Tia Fulks and Tiana Manera.
Mele Tafua helped Casem’s lead with eight points while Angelica Cudiamat and Lilya Cummings finished with four points apiece.
Team Lihue 55, Hanamaulu 39
Hanamaulu launched eight treys to Team Lihue’s pair. Despite the flurry from outside the three-point mark, Team Lihue took a 55-39 win off the court.
Hanamaulu got in the books early, taking a 6-2 edge at the end of the opening period. Team Lihue answered the math in the second frame and ended the period with an 8-8 deadlock before exploding in the third period.
Roed Pagatpatan ignited for one of his two three-balls to fuel a 16-1 drive which gave Team Lihue a 24-9 lead.
Hanamaulu tried to answer the deficit, launching its flurry of treys, but despite the pair of treys from Tokyo Beti and Oscar Langinlur and three from Briksdale Maulit, Hanamaulu came up short.
Langinlur led the Hanamaulu effort with 14 points followed by Maulit with a dozen marks.
Red Pagatpatan topped the Team Lihue scoring on 13 points with Raiden Pagatpatan adding 12 points and David Pascua finishing with 11 points.
Hanapepe 47, Hanakila 37
More treys rained on the day’s finale as nine long balls from outside the three-point arc highlighted the match between Hanapepe and Hanakila, a team made up primarily of players from the Hanalei and Kilauea areas.
Hanakila stayed close in the opening frames before Hanapepe’s Naikoa Simao burned the net with a trey in the third period to lead the Hanapepe 11-5 run for a 24-18 halftime lead.
Hero Raza and Chanson Hawelu unleashed their treys in the opening period to keep Hanakila close, 7-6. Giovani Rodriguez uncorked a trey in the second period to keep Hanakila in the chase as the buzzer sounded on a 13-11 Hanapepe bulge. Keane Cabebe and Nathan Gardner were other Hanakila players who punched the button on three-balls.
Raza topped the Hanakila effort on 12 points followed by Cabebe finishing with eight points. Howell and Gardner each closed with five points.
Jeldric Alupay topped the Hanapepe win on 14 points followed by Simao at nine points. Joey Perpose, Mark Placheta and Lacin Montemayor each dropped eight points in the win.
Thursday Games
Team Lihue 41, Kamikaze 20
Team Lihue, coached by Tyren Hepa, exploded in the fourth period to enhance its 12-9 lead over the Kamikaze.
The Kamikaze, coached by Keven Hanano, opened in the black, holding a 7-5 advantage following two periods of play.
Team Lihue cranked out a 7-2 run for the 12-9 bulge at the break.
The lead ignited into an explosion in the fourth period when Team Lihue, enhanced by four bombs from outside the three-point mark, fueled a 19-4 run en route to its 41-20 final.
David Pascua, firing off three of the four treys, topped the scoring on 16 points followed by Raiden Pagatpatan adding 15 points. Red Pagatpatan finished with four points, and Jonas Jarquio had the remaining trey in the fourth period.
Takeshi Komar topped the Kamikaze scoring with eight points followed by Campbell Hanano adding four points.
Papalina 47, Hanakila 30
Christopher Cromartie set the pace for Papalina, scoring a game-high 19 points in its 47-30 win over Hanakila.
Despite the torrid attack where Papalina posted a 21-10 halftime lead, Hanakila, made up primarily of players from the Hanalei and Kilauea areas and coached by David Simon, unleashed a barrage of treys as six of its players pushed the button on three-point bombs.
John Calvan opened the rain of treys with his second period bomb, Jonah Flores and Nathan Gardner dropped fifth period treys, Jesse Zemmel fired off two — one each in the fifth and sixth periods — and Chanson Hawelu hit the button on one in the final period.
Zemmel’s pair of treys gave him high-point honors for Hanakila with Hero Raza adding five points.
David Sabo helped Cromartie for Papalina with 10 points and Joshua Rivera added eight points.
Aloha State Warriors 40, Hanamaulu 18
DJ Garalde fired of a trey, the sole one in the match, in the first period.
But that was all the scoring Hanamaulu could muster as the Aloha State Warriors went ahead 8-3 en route to its 40-18 win.
Ofa Paua led the Aloha State Warrior scoring with 14 points followed by Michael Cruz adding eight points. Keon Orlando and Raffy Perono each finished with six points.
Briksdale Maulit topped the Hanamaulu scoring with nine points followed by Garalde adding five points.
The county’s Division II, or players in the seventh and eighth grades, has three games on tap today at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 6 p.m.
