With only eight days till Valentine’s Day, it’s hard to not find signs that love is in the air.
“It’s funny that Valentine’s Day is that one day out of the year when everybody focuses on love,” Kauai Island Singers Showcase co-founder Melissa Mojo said. “Well, we’ve got to focus on love every day of the year.”
To stay in line with that holiday spirit, the KISS singers will host a concert, aptly themed, “Feel the Love,” at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 at Ha Coffee Bar in Lihue.
“This is the kind of thing, where if people go out on Valentine’s Day, they can prolong it and have two nights of love,” Mojo said with a laugh. “We have quite a few people who come to every concert, and I’m just really appreciative, so this is a way for us to show our appreciation and love for our audience.”
Ten KISS singers will perform 20 songs, including “Let’s Fall in Love” by Ella Fitzgerald, “Star Dust” by Nat King Cole, “The Man I Love” by Ella Fitzgerald, “Love Me Like a River Does” by Melody Gardot, “Killing Me Softly” by The Fugees and “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor.
The free event will feature Mojo, Erik Hagen, Mike Kobayashi, Diana Leone, Barbara Pendragon, Dhyana Dunville, S. Kamal Salibi, Trishana Star, Fran Nestel, and Karen Tilley. Hank Curtis on the grand piano and Laine Griffith on saxophone, flute and clarinet will provide the instrumental accompaniments to each song.
In advance of the post-Valentine’s Day concert, the KISS singers, along with Curtis and Griffith, will also perform 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at The Mahiko Lounge at Gaylord’s Restaurant (Kilohana Plantation) in Lihue.
“It’s kind of an experience for the singers to feel out what it’s like to do lounge singing,” Mojo said. “That’s the whole thing about KISS — we’re always trying to create new experience for the singers so we can get used to being in the spotlight.”
