Both Kauai Interscholastic Federation representatives placed at the Outrigger Resorts Girls Soccer State Championships — Division II tournament on Oahu.
The KIF champion Kapaa High School’s varsity girls soccer team finished the tournament in fourth place.
In the third-place match, the Warrior wahine lost to PAC-5 of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex in Honolulu.
“Their first goal came on a ball that was mishandled by our goalkeeper. The first half ended, 1-0,” said Kapaa head coach Kevin Cram in a phone interview following Saturday’s contest. “In the second half, they picked up (another) goal on a penalty kick. Then we put one our defenders up as a forward and she scored a goal.
“Then they scored their third goal on a free kick,” he added.
It was Warriors senior sweeper Eryka Keoho that scored the goal for Kapaa.
“The girls learned a lot from the experience here and played well. I’m pleased with their performance and they learned a lot,” Cram said. “The main thing is they know they can compete with any other team at the state level. Having that experience, knowing they can play with the best, hopefully they’ll use that as a springboard to better themselves for the coming year.”
KIF runner-up Kauai High School placed sixth in the state tourney.
In the fifth-place match, the Red Raider girls lost to Kamehameha Schools — Hawaii, 3-1.
“We had several chances in the first half — just didn’t convert them,” said Kauai head coach Kevin Devitt by phone Saturday. “We got a little down on ourselves, but we were able to get a goal and play hard the rest of the game.”
Red Raiders senior forward Caitlyn Cantorna scored the goal for Kauai.
“We’ve come a long way since October when we started training,” Devitt said. “There’s still a few things we can work on for next season, but overall we did very well, and we were very competitive with the teams statewide.”
