PUHI — “Stop if you love” me was the impetus behind a flash mob Wednesday that thrilled students at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School.
“This was the students’ idea of spreading awareness on safe driving,” said Gayle Thompson, advisor of the CKMS Leadership Class. “The ‘Stop if you love me’ theme is a statewide driver education campaign, and the students turned it into a weeklong program here at CKMS.”
Jenny Villanueva and Chey Fujii, eighth grade students, and Jacie Ogata, a seventh grade student, spearheaded the flash mob.
The weeklong event also had a trivia day and posters were hung around the school.
“The students took it and have petitions going around the entire week, pledging to become safe drivers,” Thompson said. “Jenny and Jacie even composed the lyrics to the tune they were dancing to.”
Fujii said the goal of the campaign is to raise awareness among the middle school students about safe driving, despite them being too young to drive.
“If the students are aware, they can also make a difference by telling parents not to text while driving, or not to talk on their phones,” Fujii said. “When they do get their driver’s license, they’ll know about safe driving.”
