Development would provide much-needed affordable housing
While I appreciate and thank all concerned residents of Kauai for your anti-development stance to protect our fragile island, I tend to disagree that the Hokua Kapaa development adjacent to the middle school is one to be stopped. There is a severe shortage of affordable and acceptable housing for longtime residents of Kauai as families.
Some families are living three generations to a home! There needs to be some strategic development approved, and yes, traffic will get worse, but that’s a solvable problem. Pass legislation limiting the number of cars on the island and watch public transportation explode! National Parks and many other small, pristine islands around the world do it, why not Kauai?
There are more onerous “out of state buyer” developments planned that carve up valuable, pristine lands between our already existing towns in planning stages, (i.e. development being considered between Kealia Beach and Anahola/Kong Mountain, or the “billionaire” Hanalei/Princeville debacles). Those developments, and all hotels/timeshares, are the developments that must be stopped at all cost.
Hokua Place is contiguous to an already existing town, does not sit in a location that is particularly beautiful, or on any view plane that sets our island apart as we drive the roads of Kauai. The Hokua development should happen and all others I know of being considered now should be stopped! Especially those perpetrated by out-of-state developers very satisfied to selfishly carve up for money the landscape that makes Kauai special! We must put an end to them, now!
