Hulali Kiyoko Rivera has been fighting for life for almost all of her 4 years.
When she was 8 months old, she was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the retina.
The community responded with garage sales, bake sales and car washes to help the infant, the daughter of Anolani Higashi and Kelo Rivera, to travel to California for chemotherapy over a four-month period.
With the cancer at bay, Hulali, on a routine eye check, discovered it had returned at an even more aggressive state. This resulted in the loss of her right eye.
Adding to this, tumors were discovered in Hulali’s brain.
Kalapaki Joe’s, named after owner Jody Valente’s father, added to the list of Team Hulali supporters this year after Valente announced that during the Super Bowl, the chain of sports bars would hold a drawing to benefit the 4-year-old from Anahola.
