LIHUE — The Kauai High School baseball team kept its record clean with an 8-4 win over the Mid Pacific Institute on Friday at Vidinha Stadium.
Playing in the Waimea High School Invitational Baseball Tournament, Kauai, 2-0, will close the tournament with a 9 a.m. game today against Kaimuki while MPI will go up against Kapaa starting at 11:30 a.m.
The Kauai win hands Mid Pacific its first loss for the tournament after the Owls opened with a 15-0 win over Lahainaluna and a 7-1 win over host Waimea on Thursday at Hanapepe Stadium.
“The boys were hitting, today,” said Kauai coach Hank Ibia. “We worked hard for this. Mid Pac hasn’t lost a preseason game, so this is special for us.”
Facing a 1-0 deficit in the third inning, the Kauai bats erupted to push five runs across the plate.
Micah Layosa led the charge, finishing the day 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs. During the third inning, Layosa whacked a 2-run homerun and followed it with a 2-run triple in the fifth inning.
Cal Koga, who picked up the win on the mound, drove in 2 runs on a double. Doug Miyasato pushed a run across on two singles, and John Dumlao singled.
On the mound, Koga went four innings, walked three, stuck out two, and allowed two runs and three hits. Miyasato came in relief, going three innings with four hits, two walks and stuck out one.
