Buy your way into Kauai’s hearts
Attention, island billionaires: Have I got a public relations coup for you, and when I say “you,” I mean a certain young man who started a social media site years ago and has been buying up land on the North Shore lately.
For mere pocket change, you could purchase the Coconut Plantation Resort land that is going up for auction in March and donate it to the people of Kauai.
You would be more popular than a green light leaving the Safeway parking lot in Kapaa. I’m sure there would even be some tax benefits. We could turn it into a park, maybe call it Zuck Park or something like that. What better way to be welcomed with open arms and appreciated as a good neighbor to our beautiful island.
Hey, if this works out you, could go over to the south side of the island and buy out a certain group who wants to stink up Mahaulepu Beach, turn it into a park, and maybe call it Zuckerland or something like that.

Sunday’s KCC breakfast was wonderful
A huge mahalo goes out to everyone who worked so hard to make the annual fundraising breakfast a success. We have been enjoying the event with many of our friends for many years and look forward to attending again next year.
And a bonus this year was the great sunny and dry weather.
A special thanks to all of the students who really made this day special for all that attended.

Traffic situation can be improved
This week’s TGI poll question reads, “Down the road, the traffic situation on Kauai will:”
In my opinion, it can get better. One of the biggest obstacles to improving our traffic situation is the lack of major funding (hundreds of millions of dollars) to add the needed roads, highways and infrastructure to make it all work.
I see immediate relief with better road maintenance and management of traffic flow.
If our roads are not kept up, it makes traffic worse and dangerous. If we don’t have proper management for better flow, we find ourselves in the constant “Kapaa crawl.” I’m sure many would agree that driving at any speed is better than not moving at all, wasting fuel and polluting the environment.
Our best tool yet to accomplish this is number one, the roundabouts. Unlike our signals, roundabouts are designed to keep traffic flowing; however, to make this work is the job of drivers, and many don’t have a clue, or just don’t care to see they work properly. It’s the exact reason we see vehicles bumper to bumper, waiting to go around in Kapaa.
Widening Kuhio Highway at the Kawaihau Road entrance would alleviate the bumper-to-bumper traffic every afternoon for those wishing to go north. Traffic cones, such as the contra-flow uses, can be used to stop this everyday crawl through Kapaa.
Simple, creative management, maintenance and traffic flow solutions can and will help alleviate the bumper-to-bumper gridlock, and it won’t cost hundreds of millions of dollars we don’t have.
