LIHUE – The Department of Water is encouraging water users to find and fix residential leaks during the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s annual “Fix a Leak Week” from Monday through Friday.
As part of the EPA’s WaterSense program, it encourages Americans to help put a stop to the more than 1 trillion gallons of water wasted from household leaks each year.
“The amount of water it takes to wash 270 loads of laundry,” Kirk Saiki, DOW manager and chief engineer, said of the lost water.
DOW will giving away free leak detection starter kits at their office, 4398 Pua Loke Street, in Lihue. Office hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Starter kits will include three toilet leak detection dye tablets, two low-flow kitchen faucet aerators and two low-flow showerheads. Kits are limited to one per household.
DOW is encouraging consumers to follow these three steps: Check for leaks, twist and tighten hose and pipe connections and replace the fixture if necessary.
