POIPU – A fourth visitor drowned on Kauai Tuesday.
The incident happened at Keoneloa Bay, also known as Shipwrecks, in Poipu.
Jake Jelinek, 74, of Colorado, was found unresponsive shortly after 4 p.m.
It was reported that Jelinek had gone swimming when he began having difficulty due to large waves. It appears he hit his head on the reef during the struggle.
Upon noticing Jelinek floating face down in the water, a family member swam out to him. With the help of bystanders, they brought him to shore and performed CPR until fire personnel arrived. Efforts to resuscitate Jelinek on scene were unsuccessful.
He was transported by medics to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, is assisting the Jelinek’s family.
